This course provides the knowledge and skills required to provide pre-hospital care and function as an entry-level Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) in accordance with the standards established by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and the Illinois Department of Public Health. This course incorporates lecture, lab, and clinical components. Topics include National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) foundation standards, anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, pathophysiology, life span development, public health, pharmacology, airway management, respiration, artificial ventilation, patient assessment, medicine, shock and resuscitation, trauma, special patient populations, and EMS operations. Completion of this course should prepare the student for both the cognitive and psychomotor requirements of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) First Responder exam and the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH). Students planning to submit an examination request and subsequent licensures will be required to meet eligibility requirements of NREMT, IDPH and relative agencies.
